Mayfair boy, 4, shoots himself

Philadelphia police officially are releasing few details of Saturday’s shooting involving a 4-year-old Mayfair boy, but his single chest wound appears to be self-inflicted.

A police department spokeswoman, Officer Jillian Russell, said that the special victims unit is still investigating how the youngster would have gotten his hands on a gun. The gunfire occurred at about 7 p.m. in a house on the 6200 block of Cardiff St.

The boy, whose identity has not been released publicly, was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where he remained in critical, but stable condition on Tuesday.

One published report, which did not cite a source, stated that the youth found a handgun under his mother’s bed pillow. The report identified the weapon as a .38-caliber.

It was unknown if adults were home at the time. No criminal charges have been filed. ••
